Greek Police Strengthen Protection After Protests Against Israeli Passenger Liner

Hellenic officials have substantially boosted safety arrangements at multiple key harbors in an initiative to keep protesters from targeting a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Recent Protests Prompt Increased Protection

The heightened security at Patras and Katakolo was implemented following previous protests when the MS Crown Iris made port in Kalamata in the past few days. Earlier, travelers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the vessel had to reroute to Cyprus after local residents staged a protest on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"Despite the peace agreement, Israel is maintaining its military operations in Gaza," stated a schoolteacher who joined the Kalamata demonstration. "Civilian, unarmed civilians are being slain."

Passenger Experience and Popular Sentiment

Aboard the ship, tourists watched as protesters in Kalamata chanted: "You require the authorities, you're not wanted in Greece."

Yannis Sifanakis, who dedicated the summer to coordinating anti-war protests throughout Greece, declared: "Those Israelis who endorse the actions of their government aren't embraced here."

International Background and Diplomatic Relations

Constantine Filis noted: "Owing to geographic proximity and our traditional ties with the Arab nations, the typical Hellenic citizen is more responsive to what is happening in Gaza than the typical central or north European."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a difficult position," he continued. "The State of Israel is much more important for us as an associate than it is for most European states."

Commercial and Travel Implications

National figures show that over 600,000 tourists from Israel came to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of greater tourism this year. This substantial influx underscores the much-improved relationship between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Tactical Partnership and Regional Factors

From Athens' perspective, Israel serves as not only a crucial counterweight to regional rival Turkey but also grants the added benefit of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"Greece is not going to risk its relations with Israel," remarked Filis. "But from a humanitarian perspective we must be more accepting, more equitable, more committed to show the improper actions of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Demonstration Campaign and Global Response

The magnitude of the Greek demonstration campaign has clearly taken Israel aback. Lately, the state's external affairs office counseled visitors to remain inconspicuous, while local media characterized Athens as a "former paradise" due to protest markings appearing on buildings in the urban center.

Victor Eliezer of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece voiced worry: "Of course we're worried. The kind of discourse we're experiencing can rapidly transform into prejudiced."

Upcoming Events and Requests

Progressively, opponents have targeted Athens' tight relationships with Israel. As many as 5,000 people lately went to Crete to call for the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO establishment that after the commencement of war in Gaza has functioned as a key refuelling post for US naval vessels, fighter planes and ships headed to Israel.

"We have achieved successes," declared an anti-racist coordinator. "Our central requirement, now, is to halt every partnership with Israel."
